微軟Mix主角：與Silverlight 3
即將發佈的Internet Explorer 8極可能是本週微軟Mix會議的最大焦點，但預期微軟也將花同樣的時間介紹下一版的Flash殺手，Silverlight 3。
微軟已經發佈接近完成的候選版IE 8，一般預料該公司將在18日於拉斯維加斯召開的網路開發者大會上，正式宣佈IE 8完工。去年IE 8就是在Mix大會上初次亮相。
IE 8的主打特色包括隱私瀏覽模式、切割網頁的一部份作單獨瀏覽，及符合更多網路標準。
IE 8的發佈時機正值網路瀏覽器市場升溫，微軟現有版本的市佔率滑落，執行速度也相對不如Google和蘋果的產品。微軟上週公佈一段影片，顯示IE 8載入許多網頁的整體速度依然較快，僅管其JavaScript引擎較慢。
至於Silverlight，微軟持續加入更多功能，並高調宣布幾項合作協議。但Adobe 也成功贏回若干顧客，如大聯盟棒球，並緊抓其普遍性優勢。
預期微軟也將提供其Windows Azure計畫的更多細節。
這個雲端作業系統在上週末發生首次當機，且持續將近一整天。
微軟在去年10月的專業開發者會議（PDC）上首發表Windows Azure後，至今未提供該服務收費的細節，但微軟應該也不會在Mix這種場合說明定價問題。
我個人期待的是，能與多重觸控先鋒Bill Buxton對談。他目前任職於微軟的研究部門Microsoft Research。預期Buxton會談到設計對科技產品的重要性，這是他加入微軟後一直強調的概念。
我在微軟最近舉辦的TechFest活動上，有幸訪問到Buxton。他談到3年前加入這家公司所面臨的挑戰。他表示，當時微軟的資深領導階層，只有一人擁有設計背景。Buxton說：「那一直不是（微軟）DNA的一部份。」他認為微軟可以作得更好，並以該公司的Arc Mouse（設計師滑鼠）為例，證明強調設計的成果。
微軟缺乏設計焦點，正是吸引Buxton的原因。他告訴我：「你要去能發揮自己能力的地方。」他只是要確定對方有「善意的耐心」。Buxton說微軟執行長Steve Ballmer說服他，微軟真的有心在設計面作出改善。 Buxton預期成果還要一段時間才能顯示。他說：「這是一家大公司，無法在一夕之間改變。」（陳智文譯）

- Microsoft Silverlight 3 Tools Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (31.3 MB): this package is an add-on for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 to provide tooling for Microsoft Silverlight 3. It can be installed on top of either Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Visual Web Developer 2008 Express with SP1, and it provides a Silverlight project system for developing Silverlight applications using C# or Visual Basic.
